Cleansing Balms: Why They Beat Micellar Water for Makeup

Micellar water became a cult cleansing tool a decade ago. For light makeup or a quick refresh, it's fine. For a full makeup day — foundation, mascara, sunscreen, the lot — a cleansing balm cleans better and treats the skin better.

Why micellar water has limits

Micelles are tiny surfactant balls that surround oil and pick it up. They work well for water-soluble dirt and light foundation. They struggle with waterproof mascara, heavy SPF (especially mineral), and silicone-based primers. The 'wipe until the cotton pad is clean' habit also drags the skin and can irritate over time.

Micellar water that doesn't rinse off (most don't) leaves surfactant residue. For very sensitive skin this matters; for most others it's neutral, but it isn't a complete cleanse.

How a cleansing balm cleans differently

A balm is solid at room temperature and melts on contact with skin. The oils dissolve makeup, SPF, and sebum (like dissolves like). Adding water emulsifies the balm, turning it into a milky liquid that rinses away cleanly. No tugging, no residue, no separate eye-makeup-remover step.

Heimish All Clean Balm (cult Korean import), Banila Co Clean It Zero Original, and Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm are the reliable choices. The Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter is the cheap UK pharmacy option that performs above its price.

The double-cleanse logic

Oil/balm cleanser first to remove oil-based dirt (makeup, SPF, sebum). Water-based cleanser second to remove water-soluble dirt (sweat, dust, environmental pollution). Skipping the second step on a heavy-makeup day works for some skin types; for acne-prone or congested skin, both steps help.

Who should skip the balm

Active fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis): oils feed the yeast. Stick with a fragrance-free gel cleanser plus a separate eye-makeup remover. Very oily skin in summer that gets congested from any oil: try a gel-to-oil hybrid (Krave Beauty Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser) instead of a balm. Allergies to specific botanical oils: read ingredient lists, switch brands.

Cleansing balms are the most underrated upgrade in a basic routine. They cost about the same as a decent micellar water, last twice as long, and treat the skin better.
