Adapalene skips the conversion chain entirely. It is a synthetic third-generation retinoid that binds the receptor directly, which is also why it is the only one of the three sold as an actual FDA-approved drug — Differin Gel 0.1% went over-the-counter in the US in 2016, and it still runs about $13 to $15 for a 45-gram tube at any CVS or Target. Fewer conversion steps generally means faster, more predictable results, but it also means less room for your skin to buffer the dose on its own — which is exactly why the "strongest" option on paper isn't automatically the right first purchase.
Picking Based on What You're Actually Fighting
If you've never touched a retinoid before and your skin already flares at fragrance, weather changes, or a new cleanser, start with retinaldehyde, not retinol. It gets you most of the same collagen-signaling benefit with a noticeably gentler first month, and The Ordinary's Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane (around $10) is a reasonable low-stakes entry point. Skip straight past the 1% retinol serums that influencers push as "beginner friendly" — a 1% concentration of an inactive precursor is not gentle, it's just slow to show you the damage.
That said, this isn't universal advice. If breakouts are your main complaint rather than fine lines or rough texture, adapalene is the better first move, full stop. It has direct FDA backing for acne specifically, the evidence behind retinaldehyde for active breakouts is much thinner, and dermatologists reach for it first in exactly this scenario for a reason. The trade-off is that adapalene's purge phase tends to be more pronounced around the nose and chin in the first four to six weeks — small, deep, whitehead-style bumps that clear on their own if you don't panic and stop using it on week three.
Buffering: The One Habit That Prevents Most of the Damage
Whichever one you land on, the mistake that sends people back to a dermatologist's office is applying it nightly from day one on bare skin. Buffer instead. Moisturize first, wait about twenty minutes for it to fully absorb, then apply a pea-sized amount of the retinoid — roughly half a gram, which is genuinely enough for your whole face — and follow with another thin layer of moisturizer if your skin still feels tight. Sunscreen the next morning isn't optional with any of the three, but the reasoning is usually explained backwards. Retinoids don't make your skin photosensitive in the dramatic way tetracycline antibiotics do — they thin the very outer layer of dead skin cells slightly, which means UV reaches live cells faster and does more damage per minute of exposure. Give whichever one you choose a full twelve weeks before deciding it isn't working.
