Every third skincare launch this year seems to lean on squalane — it shows up in the first five ingredients of lip oils, "glass skin" serums, even a handful of mineral sunscreens now use it as the finishing note that keeps the formula from feeling chalky. The Ordinary sells a $7.90 bottle of nothing but squalane and moves enough of it to keep it permanently on backorder at some retailers. Biossance built an entire brand around a single molecule. So the obvious question is whether squalane actually does something your skin needs, or whether it's just a cheap, stable oil riding a very good marketing story.
What Squalane Actually Is (and Isn't)
Squalene — with an e — is a lipid your skin already makes. It's a component of sebum, the oily film your sebaceous glands produce, and it typically accounts for somewhere around 10-12% of that sebum in a healthy adult. The problem with squalene in its natural form is that it's unsaturated, which means it oxidizes fast once it's exposed to air and light. Leave a bottle of pure squalene serum open on a bathroom shelf and within weeks it can turn rancid and mildly irritating.
Squalane — with an a — is what you get after hydrogenating squalene, which is chemistry-speak for saturating those unstable double bonds so the molecule stops reacting with oxygen. That's the entire innovation: a shelf-stable version of a lipid your skin already recognizes. It doesn't clog pores in any meaningful way — most comedogenicity scales put it at 0 to 1 out of 5 — and it sits in that useful middle ground of being light enough to layer under makeup but rich enough to function as a standalone facial oil for drier skin types.
From Shark Liver to Sugarcane: Where It Actually Comes From
This is the part of the squalane story that most product pages skip entirely. Until roughly the mid-2010s, the overwhelming majority of cosmetic squalene was extracted from deep-sea shark liver oil, because certain species store enormous reserves of it to help regulate buoyancy at depth. Conservation groups, including researchers cited by the IUCN's shark specialist group, flagged that harvesting at commercial scale was putting real pressure on slow-reproducing deep-sea species that were already vulnerable.
The industry response was plant fermentation, and it worked better than anyone expected. Olive oil distillation byproducts yield squalene directly. Amaranth seed oil is a smaller but real third source. If a product doesn't specify plant-derived or sugarcane-derived on the label, it's worth asking the brand directly before you buy — reputable companies list their sourcing without being asked, and the ones that stay vague usually have a reason to.
How It Stacks Up Against Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides
People treat squalane, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides as interchangeable "hydrating ingredients," and that's the single biggest source of disappointment with all three. They do genuinely different jobs. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant — it pulls water toward itself, either from a humid environment or from the deeper layers of your own skin, which is why using it in a bone-dry room without sealing it in can actually leave skin feeling tighter afterward. Ceramides are structural: they're the actual lipids that fill the gaps between skin cells in what dermatologists call the brick-and-mortar model, and a depleted ceramide layer is a large part of why eczema-prone and mature skin loses water so fast. Squalane sits in a third category entirely, as an emollient that mimics your skin's own oily film and slows water loss by sitting on top of everything else.
The practical upshot is that squalane on its own won't repair a compromised barrier the way a proper ceramide cream will, and it won't plump fine lines the way hyaluronic acid does when the air around you actually has moisture to give. What it does well is lock in whatever you applied underneath it. Layer a hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin, follow with a few drops of squalane, and you'll hold onto more of that water than either ingredient manages alone — this is the one combination worth actually committing to, not hedging on.
Who Squalane Actually Helps

Combination skin does fine with it too, though the honest answer is that combination skin does fine with almost anything applied in moderation, so that's not much of an endorsement on its own.
Where the Marketing Overstates the Evidence
Anti-aging claims are where squalane gets stretched past what the ingredient can actually support. It's an emollient, and smoother, better-hydrated skin does tend to show fine lines less obviously in the short term — but that's a texture effect, not collagen stimulation, and it's temporary. Brands that position squalane serums next to retinol and peptides as part of an "anti-aging arsenal" are counting on you not knowing the difference between an ingredient that changes skin structure and one that changes how light bounces off the surface.
There's also the "skin-identical" framing itself, which is technically accurate and slightly misleading at the same time. Squalane is structurally close to what your skin produces, but it's not squalene, and applying it topically doesn't restore or boost your own sebum production — sebum output actually declines with age regardless of what you put on top of it, starting for most people sometime in their mid-to-late twenties. A $62 bottle from a prestige brand isn't chemically different from a $7 bottle in any way that matters to your skin; both are typically 100% squalane, and the price difference buys packaging, marketing, and sometimes a nicer dropper.
How to Actually Use It
Apply squalane as one of the last steps in a routine, after water-based serums and before or mixed into sunscreen, since it works by sitting on top of the skin rather than sinking in. A few drops go a long way — start with two to three drops for the full face and add more only if skin still feels tight after a minute. It layers fine under most sunscreens without pilling, though a handful of silicone-heavy formulas will fight with it, so test on the back of your hand first if you're pairing it with a new SPF.
Skip it as a leave-on eye product if you're prone to milia; the area around the eyes has fewer oil glands and a thicker application there is one of the more common triggers people report. And don't expect it to replace a moisturizer that actually contains humectants and ceramides — on its own, squalane on bare skin in a dry climate will slow water loss from whatever moisture is already there, but it won't add any.
