Why You Probably Don't Need a Toner

Why You Probably Don't Need a Toner

Toners were invented when cleansers were soap and soap was alkaline, leaving skin pH around 9. The toner step brought pH back down to skin's natural 5.5. Modern cleansers don't disrupt pH, so the original reason for toner doesn't apply anymore. Brands kept the category and redefined it around 'extra hydration' or 'extra exfoliation' — both of which are better served by other product types.

What 'toner' even means now

The word covers three different things now: hydrating toners (mostly humectants — same job as a thin essence), exfoliating toners (AHA/BHA leave-ons), and astringent toners (alcohol-heavy — outdated and harsh). The category isn't a step in a routine; it's a marketing leftover.

None of them does anything you can't do another way. Hydration: serum or essence does it cleaner. Exfoliation: a dedicated leave-on acid does it more controllably. Astringents: skip altogether — they damage the barrier.

When a 'toner' actually earns its place

Hydrating mist for the day

Aqualogica Glow+ Mist, Caudalie Beauty Elixir. Useful for refresh during a long day; not a routine step.

Exfoliating leave-on

Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA — sold as a toner but really a serum. Useful if you want exfoliation built into a single product step.

Korean essence layered with K-beauty routine

Klairs Supple Preparation Unscented Toner is genuinely useful for the seven-skin method some Korean routines use. Outside that context, redundant.

What to add instead if you've been using a toner

Most users notice no negative change at all when they drop toner. If your skin feels less hydrated, add a hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid or polyglutamic acid) — does the same job better. If your skin feels less 'clean', double-cleanse on heavy-makeup days instead. If your acid toner was the active in your routine, swap to a leave-on serum at the same concentration.

Skip these toner claims

'Removes residue your cleanser left behind' — if your cleanser leaves residue, change the cleanser. 'Balances pH' — modern cleansers don't unbalance it. 'Shrinks pores' — pores don't shrink; surface texture appears smoother for a few hours from temporary hydration. 'Preps skin for serums' — clean skin absorbs serums fine on its own.

If you don't enjoy the toner step, drop it for a month and watch what happens. Most routines tighten up, save money, and lose nothing.
