Face masks (sheet, clay, gel, peel) provide a satisfying ritual and a temporary visible result. They don't drive long-term skin change — that comes from daily routine. The mask category is mostly self-care rather than treatment.
What different mask types actually do
Sheet masks: brief hydration, lasts hours not days. Clay masks: pull surface oil, reduce shine temporarily. Peel-off: remove surface dead skin (mild exfoliation). Hydrogel: similar to sheet masks, slightly more occlusive.
When masks earn their place
Pre-event hydration (sheet mask 2 hours before makeup). Acute oil control (clay mask before formal photos). Sensory pleasure as part of a relaxation ritual. None of these is daily skin transformation.
Use masks for the experience, not the expected lasting result. The boring daily routine does what masks can't.
