Why Korean Skincare Sometimes Underdelivers for Western Skin

Korean skincare drove genuine innovation (snail mucin, centella asiatica, double cleansing, hydrating essences). The 10-step routine and specific product preferences are also formulated for predominantly Korean skin, which has different baseline characteristics than many Western skin types.

Where Korean approaches transfer well

Double cleansing (especially with makeup or heavy SPF). Hydrating essence layering for dehydrated skin. Sunscreens (Beauty of Joseon, Etude House — among the best globally for cosmetic feel and protection). Specific actives like snail mucin or propolis.

Where translation gets imperfect

Brightening claims often calibrated for Korean skin tone preferences (often more aggressive than Western preferences). Hydrating essences sometimes counterproductive for very dry climates (more layers without enough occlusive). Some products contain ingredients (alcohol denat, fragrance) that bother sensitive Western skin more than the Korean test panels.

Take what works for your skin type rather than adopting the full routine. Two or three Korean products in an otherwise Western routine often outperforms either approach in isolation.
