Here is the uncomfortable part: most people who think they wear sunscreen daily are wearing roughly a third of what the SPF number on the bottle promises. The factor printed on the label — 30, 50, whatever — is measured in a lab at 2 milligrams of product per square centimetre of skin. Almost nobody applies that much. Dermatology studies that actually weigh what people put on their faces keep landing on the same depressing figure: somewhere between a quarter and a half of the tested amount. Which means your SPF 50 is behaving, on a normal morning, more like an SPF 15.
That single fact reframes the whole conversation. You do not have a sunscreen problem. You have a dosage problem.
The amount is the whole game
For a face and neck, the working number is about a quarter of a teaspoon, or — if you would rather not dirty a measuring spoon every morning — two full fingers. Squeeze a line of product along the length of your index and middle fingers, from the base to the tip. That is your face-and-neck dose. It looks like too much. It is supposed to look like too much. The first time you measure it honestly, you will be a little shocked at how thin your usual layer has been.
People resist this because two fingers of most chemical sunscreens leaves a slight cast or a tacky few minutes. So they apply less, the skin feels nicer, and the protection quietly collapses. If a sunscreen feels lovely at the dose that actually works, you have found a good one. If it only feels lovely when you skimp, you have found a moisturiser that happens to contain SPF.
Reapplication is where the discipline really lives
Morning application is the easy ritual. The number that fades is the one nobody reapplies. UV filters break down as they absorb light, you touch your face, you sweat, you wipe — and by early afternoon a single morning layer is doing very little. The guidance is every two hours of genuine sun exposure, and sooner if you have been swimming or sweating.
Here is where I will be honest rather than tidy: nobody reapplies a cream sunscreen over a full face of makeup at 1 p.m. in an office bathroom. It is not going to happen, and pretending otherwise is how skincare advice loses people. The realistic fix is a powder SPF or a stick you can press over makeup in ninety seconds. Is a powder as reliable, milligram for milligram, as a properly dosed cream? No — and you will read dermatologists arguing about exactly this. But a powder you will actually use beats a cream you reapply once a fortnight. The best protocol is the one that fits the day you really have.
The spots everyone misses
- The tops of the ears — particularly if you have short hair or wear it up.
- The hairline and the part in your hair, which burns and ages in a thin pale stripe.
- Eyelids and the orbital bone. Most people flinch away from the eye and leave a halo of unprotected skin exactly where crow's feet form first.
- The neck and the back of the hands, which age faster than the face and get a fraction of the attention.
- The lips. A lip balm with SPF is not optional if you have ever had a cold sore triggered by sun.
That list is not exhaustive and it is not meant to be. It is the five places I see go wrong most often.
Chemical, mineral, and the false war between them
The internet has decided that mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are the wholesome choice and chemical filters are suspect. The reality is duller and more reassuring. Modern chemical filters — the avobenzones, the newer European ones like Tinosorb and Mexoryl that the US is finally catching up on — are well-studied and effective. Mineral filters are excellent for reactive or rosacea-prone skin and for very young children, because they sit on top and tend to irritate less.
The tradeoff is cosmetic, not moral. Zinc at a protective concentration leaves a white cast on deeper skin tones, and the "tinted" versions that fix this are genuinely better than they were three years ago. If your sunscreen makes your skin look grey or ashy, you will stop wearing it, and a sunscreen in the drawer protects nothing. Pick the texture and finish you will reach for without thinking. That is the only spec that survives contact with a real Tuesday.
SPF is half the label — the other half is the bit you ignore
SPF measures protection against UVB, the wavelength that burns. UVA is the one that drives most photoageing and penetrates glass, which is why the side of your face nearest the car window ages faster. In Europe, broad UVA protection is marked by the letters "UVA" inside a circle; in the US the words to find are "broad spectrum." If a product only brags about its SPF and says nothing about UVA, it is telling you what it wants you to hear and staying quiet about the rest.
Going higher than SPF 50 buys you very little on paper — SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB, SPF 50 about 98%. The argument for SPF 50 is not the extra one per cent; it is insurance against your own under-application. If you are going to wear two-thirds of the dose, starting from 50 lands you somewhere useful instead of nowhere.
The myths worth burning
That a base tan protects you — it is the skin's record of damage already done, roughly an SPF of 3 or 4, not a shield. That darker skin does not need sunscreen — it burns less easily but still develops UVA-driven pigmentation and is diagnosed with skin cancer later and at worse stages, partly because the myth delays everyone. That cloud cover cancels the need — up to 80% of UV pushes straight through cloud, which is how people come back from a grey beach day pink and baffled.
And the one I have the least patience for: that you can get your sunscreen from your foundation. The SPF in makeup is real but you apply makeup in a film far thinner than the test dose, and you do not reapply it. Treat any SPF in a foundation as a small bonus on top of a real sunscreen, never as the sunscreen itself.
What a sane routine actually looks like
In the morning, after whatever serums and moisturiser you use, wait a couple of minutes and then apply your two fingers of broad-spectrum SPF as the last step. Let it sit for ten to fifteen minutes before makeup so it forms an even layer instead of pilling. Keep a stick or powder in your bag and use it once after lunch if you are in and out of daylight — not as a guilt ritual, just on the days it makes sense.
Do that, and the difference shows up not next week but in a decade, in the skin on the back of your hands and along your jaw, in the photographs you have not taken yet. The retinol and the vitamin C and the rest of the shelf are arguing over the last ten per cent. Sunscreen, applied at the dose the bottle was actually tested at, is the ninety.
